Dressed in Yellow, She Said Hello

Hello!

For whatever reason, this season I have been seriously hooked on the colour yellow.  I believe it actually began last year when I bought a pair of yellow skinny jeans at a stoop sale held by Ashley McConnell of DareToUnravel blog.  I call them my Banana Pants and I'm telling you, those jeans are a conversation piece!  Now, I'm freaking over every yellow garment I see.  This past Wednesday, I went shopping with my girlfriend Erica and I somehow picked up two (2) yellow skirts.  Sure, they're completely different in style...however, really?  Two yellow skirts?  I still have yet to pick up basic tank tops for this season.  Had them literally in my hand and put them down...likely distracted by something yellow.  The first skirt I wore Wednesday night for the Rihanna concert, and I bought it at Club Monaco on sale, further discounted at the counter and totally perfect for the occasion.

This isn't me.

In real life, it's actually a bright neon yellow, and it's made from a light cotton and gathered at the waist for extra fullness.  I wore it with a neon pink tank top and looked essentially like a pack of hi-liters, but I loved it.  So did RiRi who also loves yellow...in fact she wore a fabulous yellow dress during her set that obvi I loved.

The second skirt I wore Saturday night to the Richard Robinson year-end fashion show and it's a primary yellow colour, extremely well-fitted and bought at Zara.

This also isn't me.
Hard to see them, but there are fun pockets on this skirt, and interesting seams that add detail and polish.

I planned a full-out colour blocking session with my getup...ch-ch-check it out!  (Side note:  I really suck at seriously putting effort into taking pics of my ensembles.  For some reason, the thought of taking out a camera, getting creative with the light, angle and pose and then uploading them to my comp makes me want to lie down and take a nap....so this is what you get instead.  Ya, BlackBerry.)

Shirt and skirt from Zara, shoes and necklace from Aldo, clutch from Winners and ring gifted.  Yellow nail polish by OPI, colour "Need Sunglasses?"
Just wanted to show the LOVE...ring.

Sorry for the blurred image...me and a fire hydrant-barely distinguishable from each other.  Not entirely sure why I felt it necessary to cross my arms like that...also, my left ankle looks like it's on its death bed.
I had a super fabulous night with Erica and our friend Rikki joined us after the show for a girls night out.  Late-night pizza ended it all perfectly...mmmmm!

Before I wrap up, did you happen to hear that chicshop.ca is no longer?  Sad, but true...but the good news is there is a blow-out liquidation sale!  I bought a vintage 1970s dress for an upcoming wedding called Sunny Vegas, which in itself gets me all smiley thinking about being in Vegas...then tack on a 50% sale and I might as well have been told I won the lottery!  I have chronic sale-itis from my mother, who is known to buy (seriously) 4 shower curtains and 3 mega jugs of shampoo if the price is right-regardless of the fact that she lives on her own and it will take the rest of her life to go through that much shampers.  Anyway, I double dog dare you to take a wild stab at the colour of my Sunny Vegas dress.  Chya.  Olllld Yeller.  Or I suppose in this case New Yeller.  I'll get a pic of me in it for your viewing pleasure...maybe I will go nuts and actually use a real camera too.  MAYBE.

Take care and be happy!  If you're not, I highly suggest wearing something yellow.

A cup of tea and a few tears

I had every intention of getting up to watch the wedding of the decade....Alarm set for 3am?  Check!  Actual time I woke up?  6am.  Alarm FAIL!  I have no idea what happened there, but here I am searching for and watching video highlights and hoping to catch the whole thing at a later time.  I decided to be thematic and drink a cup of tea while doing so.  Should have picked up some crumpets.

When William arrived at Westminster Abbey, alongside his brother Harry, the two looked absolutely dapper in their uniforms.  I definitely choked up a little bit when the announcer mentioned how proud Diana would be to see her two sons at that moment.  I also thought it was cute how nervous Harry looked, even more so than Will.

FINALLY, The Dress is revealed.  After all this talk, there is so much pressure for it to be perfect, but I can honestly say I think it is, especially for her and for the occasion.  The lacy Grace Kelly-esque gown was apparently made by a team of 60 seamstresses headed by Sarah Burton from Alexander McQueen.  The combination of both modest tradition and modern touches, including the sheer hints of skin and curve-hugging bodice truly encapsulates Kate's classic-with-modern-twist style.  She didn't bother trying to outdo Diana's gown, keeping the train to only 8 feet long. The detailing in the back is stunning as well, with an intricate bustling at the back, blending into flattering lines that run down the back and sides. My eyes were full of tears watching her arrive alongside her father....she just looked beautiful and SO happy!

Kate's sister Pippa was her maid of honour and also wore Alexander McQueen.  I was shocked to see she was also in white...I would have thought that anyone wearing white to this wedding would have been escorted out by the guards.  On a side note, I have to say her entire family is seriously gorgeous.  Her mother is still a ROCKET, so good on you, Wills!

MILF Carole Middleton
During the ceremony, you can tell how happy and in love the couple are.  It's sick how obsessed we all are with their relationship, but I think what it really is with THIS particular duo is that they truly seem like they will make this work.  Their union is in so many ways a much more natural one.  Not to mention, Kate being a "commoner" keeps all us other commonfolk feeling like we, too, can be royalty one day hahaha.  When during the vows, Will recited "With all my worldly goods, I thee share", I think anyone watching probably thought "oh HELLS yeeeeahhh!".

Will looks like he's containing a smile and failing.

The happy couple-Duke and Duchess of Cambridge

Chose this particular photo of the balcony kiss because I absolutely love the grimace on the little one hahahaha "Stop SHOUTING!"
And finally, the styles I loved from the guests:

Princess Eugenie in Vivienne Westwood and Princess Beatrice in Valentino, both topped with Phillip Treacy hats.

Santa Montefiore and Tara Palmer-Tomkinson both look stunning.  Love the colours and the head pieces and clutches, as well as the fur stole.
Had to include this pic of the cute itsy bitsy royals.  LOOK at those mini-princes!

Pregnant Victoria Beckham is still rocking towering Christian Louboutin heels.  Love it.  What a hot couple.

This picture is hilarious.  I feel it belongs in some romantic comedy about three sisters plotting revenge, sneaking into a wedding and getting caught.  Hilarity ensues.
These three are actually sisters on Diana's side of the family-daughters of her brother Charles, Earl of Spencer – and first cousins of William and Harry.

Last but not least the Queen looked positively glowing in her yellow ensemble by Angela Kelly.

No lie, I own the cheaper version of this outfit...bought it at a charity bazaar two years ago because it reminded me of Jackie O. Must take picture of me in it with the queen side by side!
Look at that topper!

 And style fail:

Harry's on-and-off  girlfriend, Chelsy Davey, wore an ill-fitting aqua ensemble with a ho-hum head piece.  Her skirt hem looks like she did something last-minute, dare I say using TAPE or something equally terrible to shorten it.  Shudder.

That's my take!  I will still hopefully be watching the wedding at a later time, but I couldn't wait to watch the highlights and blog about the styles!  Think I might need a new hat, you?

Election Fever

I have been a big slack-faced slacker this last week or so.  I don't know what happened there, whether it was a post-OFW slump or the fact that I've been totally overwhelmed by projects or if it's just good old-fashioned laziness, but every time I think about creating a new post, I feel wayyy too uninspired to do so.

WELL, enough is enough.  I'm leaving Thursday for Toronto to volunteer on the federal election campaign.  Actually, not to bore you with the details, but my boss is not seeking re-election, so my co-worker and I are actually helping with the new candidate's campaign in our (old) boss' riding in Scarborough.  This will be my first election experience, so I'm pretty excited to go down and get involved.  Futhermore, I am jobless as of May 3rd *not totally accurate because I still work part-time at a restaurant*, which is pretty strange/crazy/exciting/nerve wracking.  Anyway, I have a LOT of decisions to make in the next while and I have these middle-of-the-night urges to book a one-way ticket  to some overseas destination and just completely vanish for a while.  This is what change does to me:

1-External factors pop up, causing or representing imminent change
2-I react with a mature outlook, framing the scenario with a holistic and responsible frame of mind
3-Thoughts begin to creep in, slowly blasting away initial healthy response
4-Irrational and impulsive ideas begin to look like viable options
5-Emotional responses ensue, often without warning and usually triggered by relatively innocuous stimuli
6-I make a decision, usually a compromise between dullishly responsible and fully ludicrous
7-Life returns to "normal"...for the moment

I just got through a doozy of a #5, which I believe contributed to my aforementioned lack of motivation to do anything useful.  I haven't, however, completed #6 yet, sorry.  I have to decide whether I want to continue working on Parliament Hill or to find something else entirely.  I don't know about you, but sometimes it really bothers me that some jobs require "university degrees" and "experience".  I already GOT a g.d. university degree....why can't that just translate to "good at everything", seeing as clearly I am.  My mom says I'm an Amazing Amber, so file that under "relevant experience" why don't you?  Yeah!

Anyway, I'm getting super off-topic.  This blog is supposed to be about fashion.  I have, in the spirit of the election trail, compiled some inspirational photos of ideal campaign ensembles that I wish I could pack in my LV luggage and hit the trail.  Instead I'll likely ram a bunch of stuff into an American Apparel duffel and call it a day.  Some dream looks:

Canvassing
The flawless Jackie O shows us how it's done WITH A SENSIBLE SHOE no less

Rallying

More canvassing
Nothing like a classic beige trench to pull any outfit together.
This girl kind of looks like she's rocking the "flasher look", so please note I will not be trying THAT hard to secure votes.

Jogging between rally and dinner, I presume

Again, more canvassing

Victory Party
Red Bettie Page shift dress.  I actually own this beauty-bought it at Hush in Westboro

If I get opportunities to take pics of what I end up wearing, I will do so and post when I return.  I've been eyeing a pair of Paige super dark wash high rise trouser jeans that are WAY outside my budget (considering I will be jobless v. soon), but they are perfect for both casual engagements AND with a blazer can be totally business.  Literally being "business casual" without triggering a gag reflex is, like a Visa commercial, priceless.

Thanks, Captain Obvious

It's cold and I'm cranky so it's about time for a good, old-fashioned rant.

Today I received an e-newsletter from LOU LOU magazine.  Think I must have applied for a contest back in the day or something...either way, I rarely read them but this one had "Ballet Chic" as the subject line.  I groaned internally, because I knew what was coming.  Sure enough, it's all about Black Swan and the fashions that have sprung from the new ballet thriller.  Which I saw on Sunday and loved, by the way...if you haven't seen it, seriously get to the movie theatre right MEOW.  Natalie Portman needs to win an Oscar for that one.  As a further disclaimer, it's hard not to love the delicate and stunning costumes worn in the film, designed by the genius duo from Rodarte-who, while we're here, should also win an Oscar.  Just beautiful.  However, while doing a mini search for this post, it seems like everyone wants to point out the obvious ballerina style trend the movie has provoked.  One word:  YEP.

Beautiful ballerinas wearing costumes by Rodarte

Seriously, though...is this trend actually "new"?  Because I really don't think so.  Baby pinks and blush hues had already sprung up well before this past summer when the movie was announced.  Hell, half of Hollywood wouldn't have had anything to wear this past year if the skin tone/red lip trend hadn't been readily available.  I get it though, I do...I mean, sometimes you just don't have anything to write about so you just go with the easy topic.  It's January, you're tired, you are sick of writing about winter stuff, you're sick of winter-period.  I get it, truly.  I also admit I had an automatic reaction when watching the movie of wanting to slick my hair back into a rigid bun, run home and dig out all my baby pinks, blushes, sheer stockings and skin tones.  Because...wait for it...I have a metric ton of those already.  Because I've ALREADY fallen in love with clothing that make me feel like a dainty dancer...along with I'm sure is many, many other girls all over this world.  Which goes to prove how redundant this "ballet chic" trend is.  So thank you LOU LOU, New York Times and countless style bloggers...thank you for helping me with my new year's resolution #4-use the clothing I already have...because I now feel confident I can do so.  Also:  Please tell me AGAIN how great leopard print it because I'm getting anxious without your support and reassurance.

Thanks so mucccchhhhhh,

xo Amber

PS. I'm going as the Black Swan (Odile) for Halloween 2011 this year.  NO COPYING!!!  Called it, stamped it, no erasies.  Going to get red contact lenses, do the makeup, everything...should be creeptacular!

Going to stand just like this in my costume, too.

This is me in Grade 9, Baby

I find it funny when friends who have known me for a really long time refer to me as a "fashionista"...funny because I'm not sure if I really was fashionable at all for a very large portion of my life.

Growing up in Peterborough, Ontario, I was an only child to a single mom.  I had good friends, and wore what I thought looked good on me back then.  My mother couldn't afford much anyway, and it wasn't exactly a shopping mecca in the small city.  I am, in all aspects, a late bloomer when it comes to fashion.  I can't say I was one of those kids who wore her mother's pearls, and insisted on wearing scarves in grade 3 because my mom didn't have much of anything while I was growing up, certainly not pearls and scarves.  She wasn't someone who kept her old vintage pieces for her daughter...she didn't have the room.  We shopped at Biway and I was, for the most part, totally ok with it...I had to be!  I remember looking through magazines and just not even recognizing the brand names because they just weren't available to me anywhere within hundreds of kilometers.  Imagine Oshawa being our fashion oasis in high school  because they actually had a real mall?

I remember the year I realised that my childhood was essentially over.  It was Grade 6 and girls and guys were no longer just friends, we were getting hips and other fun body parts and there it was, BAM:  self consciousness.  Gone was my youthful confidence, and in its place was this overwhelming fear that I might do, say or wear something "wrong".  To say "children are cruel" is only half the truth...the other half is that the majority of kids also care too much about what their peers think.   Fast forward to high school, and I was still (and possibly even more) shy, body conscious, and socially awkward.  I had a couple  of great friends, but I think my main problem is that I couldn't do or say anything without worrying what others would think.  My high school had a different social structure as well.  It was located in a district that was made up of mostly lower class families and public housing, which accounted for the majority of the population.  The school was known for its vocational programs-auto shop, floristry and culinary arts.  For all these reasons, a very  large portion of the students who were considered popular were not the typical upper middle class, above-average grades, super athletic types.  They also weren't the types to take any risks in what they wore, and the ones that did were very distinctly categorized (and ostracized) from the "popular" group.  I remember buying a few items from the second hand shop downtown and "testing them out" at school...I was made fun of all day for wearing this one shirt.  I never wore it again.  Which was probably the real issue...because at the end of the day, if I had just worn what I wanted and stopped caring then I probably would have felt so much more comfortable in my skin.  I can honestly say the only people I was truly jealous of were the rare kids who seriously just didn't seem to give a s----.  They had, for lack of a better word, balls.  I'm not saying I was some repressed style icon or anything...I'm saying I do regret the part where I cared...and this feeling continued into my first 2 years of University.

Going to University of Western Ontario is no place for a self-conscious welfare kid, soI don't really know what I was thinking, haha.  I didn't really like any of the main fashion trends going on while I was there:  Uggs, meshback hats, etc.  I started making my own clothing in second year-here and there a new piece, and I began sketching ideas as well.  People seemed to like the things I made and I began to finally experiment with my clothing, taking risks and expressing a part of me that I had been protecting...and this time nobody was making fun of it.  By the time I moved to Ottawa to go to Carleton, I was finally feeling as though I could wear what I wanted and not care what others thought...and interestingly enough, the less I cared, the more they liked what I wore.

It's been 6 years since I moved to Ottawa, and I really feel  like I've come into my own skin.  It is really ironic that in the city that is always overlooked for its fashion, I have been able to collect a wardrobe that I really feel fits me and my personal style.  I know where I can find a unique item, where I can find great shoes and accessories, where to go for inexpensive vintage pieces and the stores that I can't leave without buying something when I visit.  I feel like I make my own rules when it comes to what looks good on me and what I think works with what I already have.  I also know so much more about the world of fashion as a whole...and learn so much more each day.

I worry sometimes that this new career I'm trying to develop is one that I should have began 8 years ago, when I was younger and had so many years ahead of me to work on it...but I don't think I would have been capable of doing it back then.  I didn't even like how I dressed myself, so how could I have made things for other people?  I didn't have that part of me really figured out very well...I hadn't learned that important lesson yet:  To be truly fashionable, you need to stop caring so damn much.  Of course, I do still care what others think...I'd be lying if I said I didn't, because I certainly don't dress only for myself and I legitimately enjoy a compliment, who doesn't?  I think, however, the real test lies in that that last moment before you leave the house to go out, and you've probably put on one too many accessories, or mismatched your shoes to your outfit or are wearing an item that is totally outlandish, and you think, for just one second, "should I be wearing this?"-and then you leave anyway, because you ultimately love what you are wearing-I think that moment right there is, truly, fashion.  Over the years, I have come pretty far...and that's one part age, one part experience and one part learned fearlessness.  I don't know what took me so long, but I love what I wear 90% of the time and it's sometimes the only thing getting me up and out in the mornings.

My fashion idols are still the individuals who take chances and push limits:  Gwen Stefani, Anna Dello Russo, that girl who wore that hat to the party the other night, my girlfriend Erica who wears skull and cross bone necklaces with her cocktail dress.  They're the type who won't go to the beach without red lipstick or the movies without knee high boots.  They just get "it", and, more importantly, they get themselves.  To be fashionable, you need to know yourself and, ultimately, be proud of the person you are.  It took me a while, but I'm there now.  So yes, I'm wearing this tonight, deal with it...and pass me another bracelet.

Amber's Spring 2011 RTW (Really Truly Want)

I've said before that I get more inspiration from street style looks, as captured by clever photographers/bloggers.  I like it because it shows the aptitude of the wearer for combining several trends and labels together in a unique, individual way.  I think it takes skill to be stylish when you are not necessarily involved in the fashion industry.

However, that's not to say that I don't like a good runway show.  I have compiled my favourite looks from the Spring 2011 Ready-to-Wear shows into a sort of "You're dreaming, Amber" list.

Work:

Valentino

I love both of these ensembles from Valentino's runway show oh so much.  The first is a classic-cut, tailored creme skirt suit.  High waists really suit me because I have a freakishly long torso for the proportions of my body and so the waist would hit at the perfect level to even me out.

The blush hues are still going to be huge this spring, which are surprisingly great for most skin tones.  I love the sheer details combined with a conservative cut.  It's unexpectedly sexy while still being completely work-appropriate.

Play:

Balmain

Ummmm, dying.  I already have a perfect white blazer but omg these pants.  I'm not even sure if it would be good ENOUGH to buy silver American Apparel  leggings and call it a day...I'm fairly certain I need these EXACT pants, which is completely out of the question.  Alright, I'll try AA.  Sigh.

Zac Posen
SO hot...I wonder if I have the guts to wear this or if it would sit in my closet with the tags on...I think I would have to find a slip of some sort to wear under the skirt.  Or have a few glasses of liquid courage and make a break for it when I stop noticing I'm about to go out in my underwear.

Evening

Vera Wang

I don't care what anyone says, I've always loved deliberately showing my bra.  Helps that I have no chest, so I feel like it doesn't look completely inappropriate...although I'm sure some of my friends have silently disagreed.

Lanvin

How airy and forgiving!  Imagine the buffet of a dinner you could eat and still look fabulous?!  Would  be perfect for bringing on vacation too...love!  (Call me crazy, but I'd probably wear a bra with it though, geez.)

Casual/Weekend:
Ralph Lauren

I am a sucker for a white eyelet fabric and this one would perfectly replace my white eyelet dress I had held on to since 2007 that after this year I had to let go...I miss it already and it's not even nearly Spring yet.

I felt like Ralph Lauren really nailed it in this collection.  There were a few over-the-top country outfits, but that was the point and the pieces worn separately would be gorgeous.  This one above is perfect as is.

The Maxi Dress:
(Casual)
Ralph Lauren, again

So flowy and summery. I feel like it would move like a dream and I love the belt.  I think there's also a slit up the front that adds a nice flirtation and keeps the skirt from looking too heavy.  The bare shoulders and low neckline would keep the wearer nice and cool even in intense heat.  Throw on a worn in jean jacket overtop at night time...perfection.

(Cocktail)
Valentino, again

Usually with maxi dresses, I need the top to be minimal so that I don't feel so Victorian, but this one was a pleasant surprise.  I love all the sheer, especially the panels right up the side of the leg, which kept it from looking like a marmy house dress.  I would add red lips and nails.  Nude high heels keep the attention on the dress.

Best overall collection for Spring (in my humble opinion):

Hermès

Jean Paul Gaultier certainly knows how to make an entrance...and an exit.  For his (final) Spring 2011 collection for Hermès, Gaultier highlighted the fashion house's equestrian pedigree, with leather bustiers, tailored jackets and ultra stylish riding gear. Horses and riders pranced behind models in broad-brimmed hats and brandishing riding crops while wearing those perfect riding boots that everyone wants.  The collection managed to be daytime casual and nighttime sensual all at once.  I love.

The Accessory:

Alexander McQueen
This clutch clearly needs to be in my hand RIGHT NOW.  I don't want to insult you with my reasons for loving it, because it's just too obvious...just LOOK at it!!  I'm not sure if this is even from a Spring 2011 collection, but to me this is seasonless.

I'd like to use a song title to illustrate my hopefulness that in the future these beautiful items, or some like them, will eventually be hanging in my closet:
One Sweet Day.
Mariah has always understood me.
